Our family life in the tropics. Lots of music, art, gardening, cooking, traveling, ponderings, and joy. Creating memories, traditions
and hopefully some humor. Trying to give back as well.

back to school

Our family is undergoing a major paradigm shift. All three children are home schooling, and therefore all home with us every day for the first time since the youngest was a baby (six years). Since dad works and composes at home it's a lot of excitement pretty much constantly.

We have only been back a week and we have already found a teacher who will be coming every weekday to give them all lessons, some private, some group. They will do traditional classes in math, language arts, writing, grammar, history, theater and French. Plus the teacher is a filmmaker so she will bring acting and film making into the school year. All three children are also enrolled in a charter public school program once a week where they will be with other home schooled kids taking science classes. In addition they have Taekwondo and private PE classes (right now they are learning baseball). Dad will continue to teach them music and novel writing, I will teach art as well as character development through stories, humor and role play.

For the first two hours every morning our young boy will get his lessons while the girls will have time for their songwriting and novel writing. Then while they get their lessons Shawn will practice drums and hang out for a special ninety minutes with dad.

I included the photos above from our recent summer travels as a send off, and to remind me of my intention for a peaceful, happy, fun, silly, and deeply enriching school year.

farewell to summer

Farewell to summer, to muddy elbows and skateparks and hikes near the reservoir, to outdoor picnics and warm breezes, and seeing old friends and family.

Hello to home. Hello to the ocean. We are back now, getting settled and reorganized, and unpacked. We are beginning a new school year and home schooling all three children for the first time ever since Shawn was a newborn. I will let you know how it goes. Wish me luck.

california reflections

A little wild berry picking,

A little Berkeley park visitin',
A little small town strollin' with my honey arm in arm,
A little bee observin',
A little lavender harvestin'.
A little tractor posin',
And some backyard fun.

california flowers

I took the kids on a stroll through a local nursery, and all of the flowers' names began coming back to me.

california peace

As we head home I am joyfully recalling one of the unexpected highlights of our summer trip for me -- doing some volunteer work in a community garden. This was located on a beautiful remote property at Amma's ashram. The peace was palpable. My son and I sat down and sang a few songs while we both drummed, the girls helped me with weeding, the kids rode their scooters and played ball. We went twice; we should have gone more. Later I was able to buy some of food grown in the garden I had tended. The heirloom tomatoes were out of this world!
